Umbrella has opportunities for getting volunteer support and for giving support as well. These are the main ways you could contribute as a volunteer to Umbrella:

Be on the Management Committee. We respect that members of the committee are living demanding lives. The Committee provides opportunities to discover, learn, develop or extend the core skills involved in management.

Host or be a "regular" at a coffee session in your neighbourhood. This is an opportunity to welcome those new to the area or new to the world of autism as you would have wished to have been yourself.

Give telephone support to other parents through a national support scheme (this involves training and support, some directly from the NAS; expenses would be met). This an opportunity to learn and apply the core skills involved in supporting parents over the phone.

Contribute regularly to a support group or, as part of a pair or small group, facilitate a support group. (Facilitating would be supported and include training opportunities). This is an opportunity to learn and practice the core skills involved in providing informal support in group settings.

Be a befriender or co-ordinate the Umbrella befriending scheme (both involve training and support, some directly from the NAS; expenses would be met). This is an opportunity to learn and apply the core skills of befriending.

Help to produce our Newsletter. This is an opportunity to learn new or extend IT skills (e.g. publishing, word processing). There are free training opportunities for this.

Just want to help as and when you can --- no regular commitment? Let us know you want to join our Help List of people willing to be contacted when there's a specific task that needs doing. You can always decline if it's not a good time. We can keep you on the list to contact again.
